Pigs

Pigs part of the Suidae family, and are referred to with a number of other names such as, hog, which is what domestic pigs tend to called, a group of pigs are often called swines.

Owners of pigs are likely to tell you they are just like dogs as they are very friendly, loyal and clever animal, though you probably wouldn't think this when someone mentions pigs. People typically think that pigs are dirty animals, but this isn't actually true, they in fact are very clean animals and don't like getting dirty. Pigs enjoy spending their play lying in the sun, exploring and playing. Pigs have a very strong sense of smell and are very intelligent animals.

Pigs can be liken to dogs due to their intelligence, they are able to be lead and house trained, you can also teach them to do some tricks. Pigs are very affectionate, playful and loving, and can really become a massive part of your family, however they do have a tenancy to want to be the top pig, so it is important you teach them that in a your household you are the boss. They are also extremely sensitive animals, so much so that you can actually hurt their feelings. You should make sure that you teach them to respect and listen to everyone living in your house, teaching them the word no' will help to do this, though you should do this in a gentle but firm manner rather than being aggressive with them.

Pigs can be hard work though and have a number of aspects to their nature that could cause havoc in your house; for example they are quite demanding when wanting food and can become aggressive if people have food around them, pigs can also teach themselves to open cupboard and fridge doors, and so if they are on a quest for food you may find they go looking in these areas.

When it comes to feeding your pig you should avoid any fatty foods especially pet fats, never give them chocolate of salty foods, also it's advised not to give them dog or cat food as it contains high protein. You should avoid overfeeding them as they have massive appetites and can eat a lot more than they need to, also avoid feeding your pig directly from your fridge as this will help them learn how to open the fridge and never give into a begging pig because once they have got away with it they will try and do it all the time. Pigs drink water and so you should always make sure they have fresh water available to them.

Pigs generally live between 12 to 18 year old but some can reach the age of 20 years old, so they aren't at all a short term pet. Pot belly pigs are probably the most popular breed to pig to have; they are sometimes called miniature however they do weight about 125 pounds. Pigs are pets that require a lot of your time and money, they need regular vaccinations, tusk and hoof trimmings, they will also need to be neutered or sprayed. Pigs also need regular access to the outdoors and exercise; they are very social animals so they need attention and playing times with their owners.

In recent times a new breed of pigs have sent everyone into hype the Micro Pig is now the new favourite pet to have and due to the high demand for them they are virtually impossible to get hold of, they also come with a very high price tag. A number of famous faces have their own Micro pig including, Paris Hilton and Rupert Grint. They have become so popular not only because they are so cute but they are very low maintenance, easy to train and are very loving. They weigh in around 46-65 pounds and reach about 12 inches tall and are very intelligent. Micro pigs are also perfect pets for people with allergies due to their skin being very similar to ours and they have hair rather than fur.
